The @canadian_herb_conference starts today! This i The @canadian_herb_conference starts today! This is one of my favorite times of the year; learning from so many amazing teachers and interacting with other plant enthusiasts all weekend is very enriching.

If you haven't purchased a ticket yet, you can do so until Saturday at noon. There are options to have access for a week or year, so there is lots of time to watch all the workshops. To receive a $25 off discount, use code HANB24.

Oh, I guess I should also mention that I will be presenting a short lecture called Embracing the Lion's Heart: Motherwort Profile and providing an update on what the Herbalist Association of New Brunswick has been up to over the last year. 💚
The Ashwagandha is nearing the end of its days, so The Ashwagandha is nearing the end of its days, soon I will be harvesting the roots and saving the seeds, a little later in the season than usual.

Ashwagandha grows in NB as an annual, and typically doesn’t make it past the first frost. It’s native to India, Middle East, etc. where it grows as an evergreen shrub.

I have always grown Ashwagandha outside, never in a greenhouse, and have been saving the seeds for the last 9-10 years. I like to think they have adapted to the climate here over the years…maybe wishful thinking!!??!!

Most years the cedar waxwings get the majority of the berries; they are sneaky! This year I have a few tricks to play so it will be interesting to see who ends up with more fruit. I’ll keep ya posted! 😀

Potting up some Hyssop tonight! Why do I love hy Potting up some Hyssop tonight!

Why do I love hyssop, well for one pollinators love it and it’s deer resistant! As for its medicinal benefits I have found it to be helpful for those who have lung or sinus congestion or any kind of pulmonary distress. It’s really great at loosening up phlegm. It strengthens the immune system, nourishes the blood and can relieve muscle pain and inflammation. Also a great herb for easing digestive discomfort. Lastly, it helps calm, steady and relax the nerves helping to relieve tension and balance emotional swings; definitely a great nerve strengthening tonic. This herb can really be of benefit for so many of us!

The flower essence helps us to forgive and to accept forgiveness from others. 💚

Working on Mugwort propagation tonight. Look at h Working on Mugwort propagation tonight. Look at how cute those little babies are! But don’t let them fool you- by the end of the growing season they may be 5-6ft tall.

Mugwort likes to make itself known in the garden, so if you plant one and let it go to seed expect to find it popping up all over the place after a year or two.

Some grow super fast, others super slow, some like heat and light while others aren’t fussy! So many nuances among them. It’s impossible to get bored learning about & from medicinal herbs!

Any guesses on what plant each one is?

We have been on a sugar free journey since the beg We have been on a sugar free journey since the beginning of the year. It started out as a month challenge and we were counting down the days until February 1st to indulge in some chocolate treats. However, after the first few weeks we came to enjoy the benefits we were seeing from not eating sugar so we decided to go for another month. Now as we go into our fourth month being sugar free it has become apparent that we will not be going back to our old sugar eating days. Yes it is exhausting some days cooking everything from scratch (we also don't eat gluten or dairy) and doing all the dishes that go along with that! It also takes a lot of planning if we are travelling anywhere for more than a few hours or during a meal time. And if we are buying anything at the grocery store that is processed we have to read all ingredient labels. There is sugar or sugar alternatives in everything!! I should mention that for us, this sugar free journey has meant only natural sources of sugar. We have not substituted sugar with maple syrup, honey, stevia, etc.

Some of the benefits we have seen since going sugar free include: reduced or no inflammation, better sleep, improved digestive function, mental clarity, steady energy levels, and skin improvement. After just a few days of eating sugar free there was an almost instant clear up of eczema, that had been present for a long time.

All this to say, that over these last three months we have been creating sugar free recipes that we want to share with everyone so that we can all break free from the very real sugar addiction! If you want to reduce your sugar or sugar alternative intake, make sure you are reading ingredient labels because it is in so many processed or minimally processed foods.

Please enjoy this sugar free ketchup recipe 🙂

These little Calendula are just starting to get th These little Calendula are just starting to get their true leaves, soon enough we will be putting them into bigger pots where they will really start to grow! In a few months out in the gardens, they will start producing their beautiful, resinous flowers that can be harvested for a variety of medicinal uses. Calendula wants you to gather it’s flowers in abundance, the more you gather the more will grow! And the best part, the petals are edible so they can nibble on them while harvesting and of course you can add them to salads.

This is a very easy plant to grow! It is an annual, but will self seed if allowed to. I have grown it in a variety of soil types with much success. It likes full sun until the afternoon rolls around and then it prefers some shade. It will tolerate cooler temperatures and will continue flowering into Fall.

Calendula does have a high moisture content so it takes longer to dry. Make sure all flowers are completely dry before storing them.

Bees love Calendula! It attracts beneficial insects, increases nutrient accumulation in the soil by drawing nutrients to the topsoil and loosens compacted soil.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is an amazing herb for the skin, it facilitates healing and prevents infection. It is best used with wounds that are swollen, puffy, red, inflamed and filled with pus and fluids. It will provide benefit to all types of skin wounds though!

Calendula will also heal wounds internally in the gut, so can be a helpful herb if someone has intestinal permeability.

Lastly, I will mention that Calendula is an amazing herb for moving lymphatic fluids. For this application, think of swollen lymph nodes or someone who is just getting over a cold or flu but they still aren’t feeling all the way better. Calendula will get stagnant fluids of the body moving so cellular waste can be eliminated from the body.

Consider growing Calendula in your garden this year so you can enjoy the many benefits of this delightful plant. 🌼
